Influencing public discourse, where?
I have taken on a challenge and returned to school. This semester one of my courses is Public Discourse and we have been challenged to blog about ways to influence public discourse. My mission and capstone project is focused on eradicating social isolation, so, I thought, how could I do both? My answer is one of my favorite places: the coffee shop. Coffee houses have taken on a culture and life of their own. I love to sit and watch others interact as I sip my coffee. There are so many who go there just to have connections. I often start up conversations with the strangers sitting next to me and we have had some interesting debates. Coffee shops are also places where music and comedians perform, so why not a presentation and discussion about social issues, inviting public discourse? I challenge you. Next time you go for your favorite latte, ask a thought provoking question of the person behind you in line. You may make a new friend, but will most certainly learn their point of view.
